Vera is at the centre of projects aimed at the conservation and management of the Mediterranean coast.

The Town Hall hosted a Levante Almeriense CAMP evaluation meeting, attended by the mayors and representatives of the municipalities taking part in the project (Cuevas del Almanzora, Vera, Garrucha, Mojácar, Carboneras, Níjar, Almería and Pulpí), as well as Junta de Andalucía Environment delegate Sonia Rodríguez. The meeting served as a first point of contact between the local administrations elected in the May elections and the provincial delegate, and an opportunity to get up-to-date on the initiatives and proposals which have been carried out by the CAMP Levante Almería since it was launched.

Sonia Rodríguez explained the commission’s main aim is to back one of the key backbones of the CAMP project, which is the necessary institutional coordination to promote good planning and management of coastal areas. The other key strand of this pioneering and international reference point project is “its essence, social participation. The administrations can’t carry out their role of land management and planning in such sensitive areas as the coast without taking into account the problems and requests of social, economic and cultural agents in all those areas.”

The delegate also said it is important to “establish coordination between the Junta de Andalucía, the Central Government, via the Environment, Rural and Marine Ministry (MARM), the Provincial Deputation and the Port Authority with the town halls which represent to a great extent all residents because they best know the peculiarities of each area.

“This is a pioneering project, and it is being carried out in the Levante area of Almería because it has been chosen by the United Nations, considering that this province, and specifically this area, is a place of contrasts, with a special attraction and elements of a special nature. The successes and the failure (which we hope will be minimal), will be extrapolated to other areas of the Mediterranean arc”, the delegate continued.

Vera Mayor, José Carmelo Jorgen, expressed respect for the meeting and the Levante Almeriense CAMP project, which he described as “an interesting plan in terms of looking to establish the problems and deficiencies in the management of the coast, and specifically, in the Levante to be able to take future decisions, together, and I believe this is the most important, with residents, responding to their needs and requests.”

Vera Environment councillor, María Manuela Caparrós, clearly explained what the Levante Almería CAMP project was: “a pilot, pioneer project in the application of the Mediterranean coastal areas Integrated Management Protocol, which came into force in March with an international character, being ratified by six countries.”

A number of activities have been carried out within this project, among then a series of talks and conferences, of which Vera has hosted one of the most recent. It was at this event that professor Miguel Ángel Losada warned of the need to preserve ecosystems, natural resources and the landscapes in order to guarantee the viability of future economic activity as the populations of coastal areas grows.
