Vera signs up to European sustainability campaign

Vera has signed up to the European Sustainable Cities and Towns Campaign, also known as the Aalborg Agreement. This commits the local authority to implementing the necessary measures to achieve a sustainable environment and to improving the quality of life in the municipality through saving energy and caring for the environment.

The agreement is included in the Junta de Andalucía’s Sustainable City and Town Programme. In total 231 Andaluz municipalities have joined the programme (representing 85 per cent of the population), the aim of which is to achieve environment sustainability through measures to combat climatic change.

This objective, one of the European Union’s main principals, involves specific action aimed at preventing, minimizing and overcoming deficiencies detected in such areas as energy efficiency and saving at local level, the management of urban waste, the countryside and greenbelt land and environmental education.

The Aalberg Agreement was approved by participants in the European Sustainable Cities and Towns Conference in May 1994. Initially it was signed by 80 European local authorities and 253 representatives of international organizations, national governments, scientific centres, advisors and individuals.
